TRIGUARD is a combination of 3 deworming ingredients: abamectin, a member of the macrocyclic lactones family of chemicals (“mectin drenches”), oxfendazole, a member of the benzimidazoles family of chemicals (“white drenches”), and levamisole, a member of the imidazothiazoles family of chemicals (“clear drenches”). It also contains 2 minerals: selenium (as sodium selenate) and cobalt (as cobalt disodium EDTA).
Indications
At the recommended dosage level, TRIGUARD provides treatment and control of the following sheep roundworms, sensitive to at least one of the 3 deworming agents contained in this product. It is also active against sheep roundworms that have single or dual resistance to the macrocyclic lactones (including moxidectin resistant strains), benzimidazoles or imidazothiazoles (levamisole/morantel) families of chemicals.
Adult and Immature Gastro-Intestinal Roundworms
Barber’s Pole Worm (Haemonchus contortus), Small Brown Stomach Worm (Teladorsagia [Ostertagia] circumcincta), Stomach Hair Worm (Trichostrongylus axei), Black Scour Worm (Trichostrongylus spp), Small Intestinal Worm (Cooperia spp)*, Thin Necked Intestinal Worm (Nematodirus spp), Hookworm (Bunostomum trigonocephalum), Intestinal Threadworm (Strongyloides papillosus), Large Bowel Worm (Oesophagostomum venulosum), Large Mouthed Bowel Worm (Chabertia ovina), Nodule Worm (Oesophagostomum columbianum), Whipworm (Trichuris ovis)
*including inhibited fourth stage larvae.
Additional Parasites Controlled
Lungworm (Dictyocaulus filaria)
Also for the control of:
Nasal Bot (Oestrus ovis) parasitic larval stages only
Itch Mite (Psorergates ovis)
Resistance Information
Where Barber’s Pole worm (Haemonchus contortus) is known to be resistant to macrocyclic lactones and benzimidazoles and imidazothiazoles (levamisole/morantel), TRIGUARD may have limited efficacy.
Resistance may develop to any drench. However, studies have shown that using combination drenches, such as TRIGUARD, can significantly delay the development of resistance. Ask your local veterinary practitioner or animal health adviser for recommended parasite management practices for your area to reduce development of resistance. It is advisable that a drench-resistance test be conducted before any drench is used.
Quarantine Use
TRIGUARD can also be used as a quarantine drench to prevent the introduction of resistant strains of roundworms onto a property. When used as a quarantine drench, it is advisable to hold treated sheep in treatment yards or on contaminated paddocks for 24 hours after treatment, before introduction.
Mineral Supplementation
TRIGUARD also provides a selenium and cobalt supplement for sheep raised in selenium and/or cobalt deficient areas.
Directions for Use
Contraindications
This product should not be administered to sheep that are dehydrated or unwell. Contraindicated for use in lambs under six (6) weeks of age. Contraindicated for use in lambs less than 15 kg bodyweight. This product should not be used when selenium intake from pasture is high or selenium is provided by other means (such as top dressing, vaccine, pellets or selenium drenches) if blood selenium levels at treatment are high. Users can determine selenium status by consulting their veterinarian.
Precautions
Safety to Sheep
Selenium can have toxic effects, particularly in sheep with liver damage that graze in areas where plants containing pyrrolizidine alkaloids are present.
Because TRIGUARD contains levamisole, exercise care in handling weak, pregnant and young animals to avoid unnecessary stress. Avoid yarding animals off-feed overnight, and ensure animals have access to water when yarded prior to drenching. Stress and lack of feed or water may enhance the chance of levamisole toxicity, even with the recommended dose.
Recommended dose should not be exceeded, except under veterinary supervision.
Some sheep may cough slightly after treatment. This passing response is of no consequence.
