What Farmco Recommends It For:

Farmco recommends Cobalex® 2000 B12 Plus Selenium for producers treating both vitamin B12 and selenium deficiency in sheep and cattle in a single subcutaneous injection. It’s the dual-action choice for properties in known deficient areas, particularly around lambing and calving when nutritional demands are at their peak. Always confirm cobalt and selenium deficiency before use and consult your animal health advisor for flock- or herd-specific guidance.

Why It’s a Farmco Favourite:

Cobalex® 2000 B12 Plus Selenium uses hydroxocobalamin — a longer-acting form of B12 with superior protein binding compared to cyanocobalamin — so circulating B12 levels are sustained for longer between treatments. The addition of selenium at 4mg/mL addresses one of the most common trace element deficiencies in Australian livestock, supporting growth, immune function, and normal enzyme activity. With zero withholding periods for meat and export, it fits into any production system without disruption.

Cobalex® 2000 — Two Deficiencies, One Injection

When sheep and cattle are short on both vitamin B12 and selenium, the impact on your operation adds up fast — reduced appetite, poor growth, ill thrift, lower immunity, and declining production. Cobalex® 2000 B12 Plus Selenium tackles both deficiencies at once. It delivers a readily absorbed source of each nutrient in a single subcutaneous dose, making supplementation efficient and cost-effective.

Why B12 and Selenium Matter

Vitamin B12 is an essential component of enzymes involved in normal metabolism. It’s stored in the liver and is necessary for appetite, energy maintenance, growth, and production. Without adequate B12, animals simply can’t meet the demands of growth and lactation.

Selenium, meanwhile, is required for normal growth and plays a critical role in enzyme function. It also supports disease resistance — contributing to antibody production and the elimination of pathogens. In selenium-deficient soils, livestock cannot obtain adequate amounts from pasture alone.

When to Use Cobalex® 2000 B12 Plus Selenium

  • Pre-lambing and pre-calving to support peak production
  • At marking or weaning for lambs and calves from 2 months of age
  • In areas where both cobalt and selenium deficiency are confirmed
  • Where animals show signs of ill thrift, poor growth, or reduced immune response

Important Contraindications

Do not use unless cobalt deficiency is confirmed. Do not use when selenium intake is already high from pasture, top dressing, vaccines, pellets, or selenium drenches. Contraindicated in dehydrated or unwell sheep, and in sheep with known liver damage concurrently grazing pyrrolizidine alkaloid-containing plants. Consult your veterinarian to determine selenium status before treatment.

Dosage at a Glance

Administer by subcutaneous injection only. In severely selenium-deficient areas, use a calculated dose of 0.1mg selenium per kg bodyweight (0.025mL per kg). Repeat every 2–3 months in severely deficient areas, or every 5–6 months where deficiency is mild.

  • Sheep: 1–1.5mL pre-lambing
  • Lambs: 0.5mL at marking or weaning
  • Cows: 4–6mL pre-calving
  • Calves: 2–3mL from 2 months of age
