The Importance of Pumps on the Farm
Pumps are an integral part of farm life and an essential tool for meeting human and stock water requirements.
A pump that doesn’t do the job of course means only a dribble of water to serve a herd of thirsty cattle or to have a shower in at the end of a long day.
Understanding Pump Capacity
There are three basic elements of a pump’s capacity to look at.
Water Flow Rate
The first is how much water the pump can move, which is usually recorded as either litres per minute or litres per hour.
Vertical Push – Head or Lift Pressure
The second is how well your pump can push water upwards vertically, which is known as head or lift pressure. This can be expressed in either pounds per square inch (PSI), kilopascals (kPa), or metres. Of course the greater the distance a pump has to push water upwards vertically, the less volume of water per minute of water it can transfer, so pump manufacturers commonly provide you with a graph demonstrating this trade-off to help you select the right size pump for your particular setting.
Vertical Suction – Suction Head Pressure
The third and final key element is how well your pump can suck water upwards vertically, which is known as suction head pressure. This can be important in some farm situations.
Friction Loss in Pipes
Finally, friction loss needs to be considered in any pump purchase situation. Friction loss occurs as a simple consequence of the fact that the water is in contact with the pipe. So friction loss will be greater if the water has to travel through the pipe over a greater distance, and it will also be greater when you have a smaller diameter pipe (because smaller diameters result in more contact between the water and the pipe surface).
Our Range of Orange Pumps
We supply a range of quality pumps from the Australian owned and operated Orange Pumps, with the business providing service and support from their WA Midvale office. The Orange Pumps head office is in Victoria and it supplies to local farm supplies stores across Australia, being owned and operated by the Davey family who’ve manufactured pumps in Australia for more than 75 years.
Popular Pressure and Submersible Pump Options
Pumps from Orange Pumps that we supply include stainless steel self-priming jet pressure pumps with long lasting wide voltage range motors and run dry pump protection in a variety of sizes. These include the SJ100 pressure pump which runs three taps at one time, the SJ200 pressure pump which runs five taps at one time, and the SJ400 pressure pump which runs eight taps at one time. We also supply Orange submersible pumps which come with a six metre electrical cable, have large low load motors for longer life, and the capacity to handle up to 18 mm diameter soft solids.
The Unique UP650 Petrol Firefighting Pump
Finally, we stock the unique Orange Pumps UP650 petrol firefighting pump. This pump is unique (and popular) because its torque tuned impeller delivers twin impeller performance from a single impeller, with the pump able to supply up to 80 metres of pressure. In addition, the pump’s hydraulically shaped impeller, neck ring seal and wide diffuser channels allow the pump to deliver a significant volume of water at high pressure, with the pump giving you 250 litres per minute at an operating pressure of 60 metres or 85 PSI. The UP650 petrol pump is also popular because it comes with a quality Honda engine, the capacity to handle solids, and super quick self-priming.
